Today, 64 years after the end of the Second World War, the European experience of Nazi aggression and occupation still holds a prominent place on the research agenda of historians worldwide. More than that: An incessant flow of publications dealing with wartime Nazism, its key protagonists, and the reactions which German expansion brought forth among the victimized nations and peoples, testifies to the continuously growing scientific relevance of the subject of this workshop.

At Vienna, on November 9 and 10, 2009, 15 distinguished specialists in contemporary history will offer new insights concerning the careers of outstanding German perpetrators, the physical and material suffering inflicted by them on individuals and groups in occupied lands forced under the yoke of Nazism, and the hard choice between collaboration, resistance, or acquiescence with a Nazi rule seemingly made to last forever.
