The one-week event includes seminars, lectures, panel discussions, and exhibition visits. Scholars, museum experts, monument conservators, and artists from different parts of Europe will debate current processes of remembrance in Europe. This interdisciplinary encounter will confront experiences with the common history in the countries of Europe and will try to determine the current shifts in collective memory.
Convenors of the International Forum are the historians Matthias Middell
and Stefan Troebst from Leipzig.
The aim of the Forum is to highlight the conflicting recollections of the European 20th century and to familiarise participants with recent research results in the area of collective and cultural memory. It is also supposed to stimulate the design of new projects for the Geschichtswerkstatt Europa programme and to embed these into the general debate on European history and memory.
The International Forum 2008 explores to the topic 1938-1949 – Decade of Violence. To date this decade stands for extreme violence in many parts of Europe and, beyond
that, it is the central frame of reference for European identity management, for the politics of history in the nation-states of Europe, and for civic and individual memories in Central and
Eastern Europe as well as in Northern, Western and Southern Europe.
Lectures during the International Forum will mostly be given in German, seminars and panel discussions will be in both German and English. Therefore, participants should be able to at least understand German and communicate actively in English.
