Ramón Reichert (Linz): The Constellation of Techniques of Knowledge and Self-Practice in Web 2.0

In my contribtion, I look at the coupling of media and knowledge in the field of social software. Here I concentrate on the procedures of electronic knowledge acquisition and representation of social networking sites (e-forms, e-portfolios, etc.).

Weblogs, community sites, wikis, pod- and videocasts are a phenomenon of everyday cultrural communication. The exponential proliferation of new networking structures on the Internet allow collective relationships, which were not previously possible. Alongside this is a specific media culture of self-practices, which often take the form of self-leadership and commitment, from accounting and meticulous benchmarking (e.g. rankings), of experimental self-relation and self-presentation as esthetic practices (e.g. profiling).
In a moving field of computerised data mining techniques, techniques of knowledge and programs for the collection and archiving of digital information have captured a noticeably larger space (e.g. the retrieval modes sorting, counting, ranking, marking). Many areas of daily life and popular culture are surrounded by a variety of evaluation practices, which are not just another management tool –new forms of self- and external commutation have also emerged. The Internet is a communications culture of mutual and permanent evaluation, which comprises the entire social and cultural space and often accepts form of business practices.

The widely ramified style discourse of the resignification and the acquisition practices of reiteration reflect the actionability of media amateurs on the net. Media function as a "historical grammar of our means of interpretation" (S. Krämer) and so create conditions of their own contemporization, displacement and direct crossing and defeat (durchkreuzung)
Media have not have not simply emerged out of technical and economic motives, but also change with their usage. The in no way self-evident reintegration of performative aspects of the use of media in the medial dimension strengthens the position of historically conditioned and socially differentiated practices of reading, writing and perception of the »user« as a condition for the possibility of mediality.
