[ Call for Papers ]

The University of Oradea will hold the nternational Conference on “Media and European Diversity” on 16-17 October 2008. The Call for Papers is open until August 8, 2008.

The conference is organized by the University of Oradea, Faculty of History, Geography and International Relations and Institute for Euroregional Studies, as an activity within the Module Jean Monnet “Mass-Media and Intercultural Dialogue in Europe Without Borders”.

The conference aims to multiply and disseminate information about the relationship between mass media and cultural, economic and political diversity, to analyze the way in which media transmits the information relating to national, regional, and European identity and to raise awareness about the need to have real efficient dialogue between the peoples of Europe.

We are looking to offer a comprehensive overview of both tradition and transformation in the social, economic, political and cultural relationships at the heart of the political and socio-economic landscape in Europe today.

For those interested, we kindly ask for papers on the following issues:

  1. the role of mass media in managing the European diversity,
  2. European Integration and the dialogue between cultures and peoplesthe economic convergence of EU member-stateseconomic, political and social regional comparisons among European areas,
  3. the relations between memory and identity in intercultural dialogue,
  4. the relations between cultural and ethno-national frontiers in the EU,
  5. means to promote intercultural dialogue in EU – especially, how it should be promoted by the EU institutions

The programme of the conference includes besides plenary lectures, the following Workshops:

  • Europe: “Unity in Diversity”. Regional disparities - Managing the European Diversity - European Identity in Historical
  • Perspective. History of European Media
  • Diversity versus convergence in European economic integration
  • Mass media and local/regional/European identity
  • Mass media and European diversity
  • European visibility in the world. Mass media and the image of Europe
  • European citizenship

Important Deadlines
- August 8, 2008:
abstract submission;
- September 20, 2008: full paper submission.

The abstracts (max. 200 words followed by 3-5 keywords) will be submitted for review in electronic MS Word format. Please provide the full names, affiliations, mailing addresses, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail addresses of all authors.

All the accepted papers will be available on the project’s website and published in a volume comprising the proceedings of the participants to the conference.

Costs of conference:
- accomodation and meals are supported by organizers;
- travel cost and insurance are supported by participants.
