Annotationen zu Weblogs und Wikis:

Die beständig wachsende Zahl an Weblogs, ihre nachgeradezu exponentielle Zunahme, führt einstweilen schon zu Überlegungen [via Svakodnevnica-Blog], wonach ähnlich wie bei Gordon Moore's Gesetz (das eher eine genaue, empirische Beobachtung auf der Basis der Road Map's der IT-Branche darstellt und viell. als "Moore's Rule of Thumb" sich bezeichnen ließe) und wie hier ansatzweise auch reportiert, ...
... für die medialen Gattungen unter dem Stichwort Weblog ein exponentielles Wachstum zu beobachten sei:

Damit in wie so oft engem Zusammenhang steht die Prophezeiung, wonach die tatsächliche Welle noch bevorstünde: The Blogosphere Is Growing Exponentially, But the Real Explosion May Be Yet To Come ist Michael S. Malones Text untertitelt.

The blogosphere may appear to be growing at four times the speed of Moore's Law. But that is probably an illusion - the Law is to tech kind of like the speed of light is to the Theory of Relativity: the upper boundary. As Technorati also noted in its report, only 13 percent of all blogs are updated more than once per week, and 45 percent of all bloggers bail out within three months - suggesting that, in reality, the true blogosphere is tracking along at about the predicted Moore pace.
No, the real explosion is just ahead. Mix 14 million new entrepreneurial start-ups with Moore's Law and something magnificent is going to happen. And soon.
I'll even tell you where to look for that miracle: it is never enough to simply say "Moore's Law" - you have to find the unique variant of its doubling rule for your own industry (i.e., Metcalfe's Law of networks [Anm. wie schon öfter in diesem Zshg.: Die Forschungen von Albert-László Barabási und seinem Team sind auch überaus brauchbar]). Find that law and you will hold the key to the future of the blogosphere.

Ausgegangen wird v.a. von der Berichterstattung auf Technorati (State of the Blogosphere August 2005; Parts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 - allesamt zu durchaus spannenden Themenstellungen und aktuellen Fragen), in der ein tatsächlich höchst stupender Anstieg der Zahl an Weblogs (v.a. im US-amerikanischen Raum) vermerkt wurde.

Zusammenfassend: Die Zahl der Weblogs wächst enorm, allerdings stellt sich bei genauerer Berücksichtigung der Daten heraus, dass bei weitem nicht alle zumindest wöchentlich "bedient" werden. Dessen ungeachtet gibt es auffällige Steigerungsraten im Sinne exponentiellen Wachstums.

Wikis: Wikis for scientific publishing lautete der sehr empfehlenswerte Beitrag von Lambert Heller (Bibliothek der Universität Münster; einer der Köpfe des netbib-Weblogs) zur Wikimania 2005 in Frankfurt/M., Abstract und Fragestellung dazu wie folgt:

Most scholars today depend on being reviewed following the traditions of academic journals, and they depend on being published by "important journals". The Open Access Movement can be seen as an attempt to put scholars (in their role as readers and as authors) back in control of the publication process. It also can be seen as part of a bigger movement searching and exploring new ways of publication - ways that fit the needs of authors and readers better. Here Wiki comes into play, but its role is ambivalent: On the one hand, wiki-software may serve many needs of the existing institutions and processes, on the other hand the wikipedia-community can be seen as a radical new model of publishing. How could Wikipedia serve as a model for the scientific community, what will the future look like, and what is left to do for wiki-developers and wiki-advocates?

Insgesamt ist der Beitrag sehr brauchbar und wurde denn auch rechtens von Chris Leonhard zum Thema Wikis and scientific communication angeführt, der sich an einer Ausdifferenzierung von Weblogs zum Zwecke verbesserter Kommunikation in einem wissenschaftlichen Umfeld versucht und zum Schluss kommt:

I think that the collaborative authoring environment of wikis mean that they are an inevitable part of the future of scientific discourse. It has all kinds of implications for author claims and citations (and, implicitly, funding?), not to mention current business models of publishers - but I think we will see wikis come into their own in the STM world within a few years, no matter what.

Übrigens war die Frage "Weblogs oder Wikis" vor dem Hintergrund ihrer Nutzbarkeit für wissenschaftlich-kommunikative Zwecke eines der Themen, die beim Workshop Emergence Room // Online-Publishing / Weblogs intensiver diskutiert wurden (damals als Anregung für weitere Schritte zum Ausbau der Plattform Kakanien revisited verstärkt eingebracht durch Rikard Puh vom Zagreb-Weblog). Wäre in der Tat eine spannende Unternehmung, zusätzlich zur fortgesetzten Publikations- und Informationsqualität sowie dem Weblog-Forum mit der Initiierung einer quasi kakanischen Wikipedia zu starten (und wäre dies nicht im Sinne der Parallelaktion, zumindest aber des Musilschen Möglichkeitssinns nachgeradezu zum Erfolg verurteilt?!). Zwei Probleme gibt es jedoch möglicherweise: Finanzierung (insbesondere im Sinne der langfristigeren Absicherung) und eine hineichend kritische Masse an KollegInnen der Zentral- und Südosteuropa-Forschung, die sich daran beteiligen möchten. Aber zumindest bei letzterem Punkt wäre die Zuversicht schon einmal gegeben... (Wo doch sogar schon Untersuchungen zur Motivation von TeilnehmerInnen an Wikipedia laufen; und klar: Wikibashing lässt sich auch anstellen und findet natürlich auch manche der Schwachpunkte, wobei schon darauf aufmerksam zu machen wäre, dass die Kritik sich v.a. gegen die deutschsprachige Wikipedia richtet und es inzwischen eine Reihe wirklich feinster Wiki-Projekte gibt.)
