Sabrina Ramet (one of her contributions, "Sliding Backwards - The Fate of Women in Post-1989 East-Central Europe" [.pdf], could be found on the platform) has a reputation as one of the most insightful analysts of former Yugoslavia and its disintegration.
'For a charm of powerful trouble, Like a hell-broth boil and bubble': Theories about the Roots of the Yugoslav Troubles is the title of an upcoming talk in London (at the LSE) on October 12.
Date: Wednesday 12 October 2005
Time: 6.30pm
Venue: Room D302 (Clement House)
Speaker: Professor Sabrina Ramet
Discussant: Daniele Conversi
Chair: Vesna Bojičić-Dželilović
This event is free and open to all with no ticket required. Entry is on a first come, first served basis.

Sabrina Ramet has explored politics, economics and culture of former Yugoslavia in a series of outstanding books including, Whose Democracy? Nationalism, Religion, and the Doctrine of Collective Rights in Post-1989 Eastern Europe (Rowman & Littlefield, 1997), Balkan Babel: The Disintegration of Yugoslavia from the Death of Tito to the Fall of Milošević, 4th ed. (Westview Press, 2002) and The Three Yugoslavias: State-building and Legitimation, 1918-2004 (Indiana University Press & The Wilson Center Press, forthcoming in January 2006) and has also edited and co-edited volumes including Rocking the State: Rock Music and Politics in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union (Westview Press, 1994) and Gender Politics in the Western Balkans (Penn State University Press, 1998). In her lecture she will summarise and analyse the sundry explanations of Yugoslavia's break-up and war.

Further recommendation, if you are interested in the situation of women in the former eastern block of Europe: Here are the two parts (in German) of an interview Sabrina Ramet gave the newspaper Der Standard.
