Dear Readers,
although it is that hot these days that working is the last thing one thinks of, and although the Kakanien team used the cooler days of July for vacancies, even that month's work days produced a considerable amount of new releases. The heat was hatching articles, so to say.

Geschätzte Leserinnen und Leser,

auch wenn es dieser Tage so heiß ist, dass an Arbeiten kaum zu denken ist, und obwohl das kakanische Team die kühleren Tage des Juli für den Urlaub nutzte, brütete die Julihitze gewissermaßen eine erkleckliche Anzahl an Neueingängen aus.

Mira Miladinović-Zalaznik placed a Case Study on Anastasius Grün's lack of understanding of the efforts of Slovenians to establishing political equality within the Habsburg Monarchy.

The Digital Anthology Discourse Time has been enriched with György Majtényi's article "Torwächter" on "The Ruling Elite of Hungary in the 1950's and 60's". The continuation and the transition effects of the life style of traditional elite groups are presented with examples on housing culture, car possession, hunt and football.

Within Conferences // Emergence we started to publish three articles of the last workshop on "'Monstrous Collectives' and the Place of the Individual". Zoltán Péter discusses the influence of Lajos Kassák's Viennese exile on his understanding of individualism in art and life, Ramón Reichert give an extensive analysis of "Techniques of Knowledge and Practices of Self-Representation in Web 2.0", and Ursula Reber launched her discussion of concepts of agency and monstrosity as presented by current theories, on the one hand, and by the European Scientific Framework, on the other hand, in her article "Programmed Identity".

As for the Materials section, we managed to publish a number of Calls for Papers: by the University of Leipzig for grants for the "Geschichtswerkstatt Europa" (the Deadline has been: 20.07.2008), by the Modern Austrian Literature and Culture Association for the conference "'Verfreundete Nachbarn'. The German-Austrian Encounter in Literature, Film and Cultural Discourse" (Deadline: 17.10.2008), by the Free University of Brussels for the conference "Historical Use of Images" (Deadline: 20.10.2008), by the University of Antwerp for the conference "Local Memories in a Nationalizing and Globalizing World. 1750 up to the Present" (Deadline: 01.11.2008), by the University of Luxemburg for the conference "The Local and the Global. Practices and Politics of Representing, Narrating and Negotiating the Past" (Deadline: 15.09.2008), by Durham University for the symposion "Visuality / Materiality. Reviewing Theory, Method and Practice" (Deadline: 01.12.2008), and by the Fakultet muzike umetnosti, Univerzitet umetnosti Belgrade for "Western Balkan Interwar Music and its European Context. International Student Symposium" (Deadline: 30.09.2008). Additionally, also the Calls by Kakanien revisited for the workshop on Open Access (Deadline: 10.09.2008), as well as for the Digital Anthology "'Fit for EU'" (Deadline 31.08.2008) are still open.

Mira Miladinović-Zalaznik befasst sich in ihrer Fallstudie mit Anastasius Grüns Ignoranz gegenüber den slowenischen Bemühungen um politische Gleichberechtigung innerhalb der Habsburger Monarchie.

Im digitalen Themenheft Wendezeiten widmet sich Györgyi Majtényi der ungarischen Herrschaftselite in den 1950er und 60er Jahren, der Tradierung sowie den Übergangseffekten der Lebensform traditioneller Elitegruppen anhand von Beispielen zu Wohnkultur, Autobesitz, Jagd und Fußball.

In den Emergenzen haben wir begonnen, die Erträge des letzten Workshops zu "'Monsterkollektiven' und dem Stellenwert des Individuums" zu publizieren: Zoltán Péter widmet sich dem Einfluss von Lajos Kassáks Wien-Exil für den Wandel seines Verständnisses von Individualität in lebenspraktischer und künstlerischer Hinsicht, Ramón Reichert gibt einen umfassenden Überblick über "Wissenstechniken und Selbstpraktiken im Web 2.0" und Ursula Reber wendet sich in "Programmierte Identität" dem Gleichklang und den Widersprüchen von aktuellen Individualitäts-, Kollektivitäts- und Monstrositätsvorstellungen in Theorie und europäischen Rahmenkonzepten zu.
