Ulrich Best (Chemnitz): The Other Places of Socialism: International Construction Sites in the Soviet Union and Their Memory

In the 1970s and the 1980s several gas pipelines had been constructed, in which most of the CMEA states participated with working brigades. Each state was assigned to a section of the pipeline, and as remuneration, the states received gas supplies in the subsequent years.

Accompanying the project was an intensive propaganda. In the press, in books, movies and public events, the construction sites constituted a projection screen for the prospective socialism, shared work and international cooperation. But the work on the building sites then was the opposite of the propagated internationalism - the daily life, and even more so the encounters between the citizens of the Soviet Union, and also those of the other ‘national’ brigades, were restrictively regulated and controlled. The reason most workers joined the brigades was the appealing pay, in currency, and other privileges.

The experience on the construction sites were formative for many participants – annual meetings for pipeline workers are still organized in eastern Germany, there are several associations, memoirs, a little private museum, in Chemnitz there was a large exhibition. In the Czech Republic the project occasionally emerges in the media today. The article examines by means of Czechoslovakian and East German cases the change of the ‘other places’ of socialism – the relation of space construction, national and local community and the role of the individual. On the one hand, the different relations of the ‘other places’ of Internationalism to the national place of socialistic states is to be analyzed – the access, the material exchange relationships, the social situation. On the other hand, this example is especially interesting for a scrutiny of utopias and the construction of communities. In socialist Eastern Europe the building sites served as socialist utopias – as the ‘other places’ of the future – but simultaneously as a connection to the capitalist world.

In the contemporary construction of these ‘other places’ the auspices shifted. The (imagined) community is defined by its reference to the past. The question now would be, how exactly in these construction spaces, times, social discourses and figures merge, and which roles the collective and the individual plays in it.
