Jewish Studies at Arizona State University in conjunction with the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies seeks to fill a tenure-tracked Assistant/Associate Professor position in Jewish history and culture of Eastern Europe of the Modern period (1800 to the present). Rank and salary are commensurable with qualifications. The selected candidate will hold an appointment in the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, will teach courses in the Jewish Studies Program and will be an affiliate of the Center for Jewish Studies. The candidate is expected to interact with other units at ASU such as the School of International Letters and Cultures and the School of Politics and Global Studies. The successful candidate must hold an earned Ph.D. in History or related fields and be trained in Jewish history as well as East-European history of the modern period. Fluency in at least one East-European language is required (e.g., Russian or Polish) as well as in one Jewish language (e.g., Hebrew or Yiddish). Knowledge of German is desired. The candidate must demonstrate excellence in research and indicate evidence of ability to train graduate students and launch creative programs intended to enhance the knowledge of Jewish life in Eastern Europe. It is desirable that the candidate demonstrate experience with interdisciplinary research, including familiarity with diaspora studies and genocide studies, and understanding of diversity in modern Judaism. Preference will be given to candidates who specialize in the role of anti-Semitism and the impact of the Holocaust on Jewish life in Eastern Europe.

The position is available beginning August 16, 2010. Salary and start-up will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications.
