The Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences of Maastricht University opens five fully funded PhD positions in the field of arts and social sciences. The programme is characterized by its interdisciplinary approach and its international character, focused on three topics:
1. European Administrative Governance;
2. Science, Technology and Society, including Globalization and Development;
3. Cultural Memory and Diversity (see below)
You will receive a coherent programme of introductory courses and intensive supervision, complemented by additional courses organized by a national graduate school. PhD candidates are offered a 3 or 4 year contract, a competitive salary and a bench fee to cover research-related costs. The condition of a 4 year contract is to undertake a limited amount of teaching duties.

B. Geremek Fellowship IWM

The Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen (IWM; Instytut Nauk o Czlowieku), Vienna has issued a call for applications for the Bronisław Geremek Fellowship 2009-2010. The Bronisław Geremek Fellowship program is to foster study and reflection of Polish national heritage in the context of European tradition. The fellowship enables a young Polish doctoral or post-doctoral researcher to become a member of the international, multidisciplinary scholarly community of the IWM to work on a research project of her/his choice. Deadline for application: May 15, 2009.
Grants for Researchers and Journalists Romania

The Institutul Cultural Român (ICR) awards grants for foreign researchers and for cultural journalists. The programme for researchers is dedicated to academic improvement, aiming undergraduate and graduate students (MA and PhD) who prepare their final papers (dissertations, theses) with a topic dealing with Romania. The selection is performed by an independent committee of professionals, based on an application file that must contain, among other papers, a reference letter from the supervisor of the BA or MA dissertation or doctoral thesis.
The aim of the programme for cultural journalists is promoting the Romanian cultural phenomenon in the foreign media. Therefore, the Romanian Cultural Institute awards grants to foreign cultural journalists who submit working projects dealing with Romanian and Romanian culture.
Application deadline: May 15, 2009.

Fellowship in Ukrainian Politics, Culture, and Society

The Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies (CERES) at the University of Toronto is accepting applications for the Petro Jacyk Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Ukrainian Politics, Culture, and Society for the year 2008-2009. The objective of the Post-Doctoral Fellowship is to support on an annual basis one of the most promising junior scholars studying contemporary Ukraine and thereby to advance academic understanding of Ukrainian politics, culture, and society. The Fellowship is made possible by generous support of the Petro Jacyk Education Foundation. Deadline for application: March 1, 2009.
