Kosova-o - Part 15

[ Kosova-o ]

Michael Martens, the SEE correspondent of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung puts forward some interesting theses about the Kosovo status talks in his latest editorial (FAZ, 7.2.2005)...

According to Michael Martens:

The Kosovo status talks will deal with a lot of issues, but not with the status of Kosovo - because it is clear that Kosovo will become independent (even if not at once and not completely).

The "lesson" for the Kosovo-Albanians is that violence pays off. The decision to start status talks was taken right after the riots in March 2004.

The "lesson" for the Serbs is that the rights of weak states (like Serbia and Montenegro) are not protected by international law.

While Serbia uses its weakness as instrument of pressure ("if you take Kosovo away, the nationalists will win!" - nevertheless, this is not sure), Kosovo-Albanians threaten the international community with more violence (which is much more realistic!).

Thus, the author concludes, that although the new "Republika e Kosoves" will not be a "particularly pleasant state" (ein nicht sonderlich sympathischer Staat), it would be even worse to force the majority population of Kosovo into dependency from Serbia.
