Bosnien | Bosnia - Part 25

[ Bosnien | Bosnia ]

It seems that Sarajevo becomes more and more popular for travel reports in Western dailies. A couple of days ago the Viennese daily Der Standard published a report on Bosnian capital which you can read here. Today I found a new travel report - this time in New York Times which tells us a story about a city slowly reclaiming its lost innocence.

This sounds very dramatic, the "lost innocence" thing. Buildings and the cityscape as a place and changing location of memory is far from beint "innocent" or something alike. The title shows that romanticism is still closely bound to Western images of the Balkans. Anyway, for the complete diffusion of "innocence" and "guilt" I'd recommend Hana's 'letter' from Sarajewo in Dubravka Ugrešić's Museum der bedingungslosen Kapitulation where the cityscape becomes an actor itself.

"The Ottoman Empire founded the city in the 1440s" ...it must be quite hard for these western journalists to find accurate historical information on the war-torn places they travel :)
