Russian and East European Studies

Grade 7: Salary £28,983 - £35,646 with a discretionary range to £38,951

The Russian and East European Studies Programme in the School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies seeks applications from candidates in history, modern languages, social anthropology, sociology, politics or other relevant discipline with special reference to Russian and Eastern European culture, for a part-time (50 per cent), fixed-term Departmental
Lecturership in Russian and East European Studies. The lecturership is tenable from 1 October 2010 for 10 months.

The duties of the departmental lecturer will be to assist in teaching and supervision for the MSc and MPhil in Russian and East European Studies at the discretion of the Director of the Russian and East European Studies Programme. Teaching will largely focus on the core
course on Culture in Russia and Eastern Europe. Activities will include delivering a limited number of lectures, leading relevant classes, and marking class essays over the course of three terms in the academic year. Duties will also involve: supervising or co-supervising a limited number of essays and dissertations, participating in the marking of extended essays and dissertations and the setting and marking of examination papers, convening seminars and the core course in Culture, keeping office hours for consultation by masters students, undertaking relevant administrative duties, and attending relevant administrative meetings. The lecturer will also be required to develop his/her research.

The post is based at 11/12 Bevington Road, Oxford.

The Russian and East European Studies Programme is looking for the candidate who most fully meets the following criteria:

(i) Relevant postgraduate qualification: a doctorate (preferably) in history, modern languages, social anthropology, sociology, politics or other relevant discipline with special reference to Russian and Eastern European culture;

(ii) Sufficient depth and breadth of knowledge in the subject to develop course materials and research proposals;

(iii) Familiarity with the existing literature and research in the field;

(iv) Experience of qualitative/quantitative research and analytical techniques;

(v) Proven research achievement and a capacity to publish at an international level, including evidence of the capacity to publish in international journals and with major presses in Russian and East European Studies and the discipline of the applicant;

(vi) An aptitude for teaching and the ability to teach graduate students of high calibre, and to carry out student assessment and examination;

(vii) Teaching and research experience in relevant fields;

(viii) The ability to supervise advanced degree students.
