I just came back from Vienna where I attended the kakanien-Emergenzen-workshop (cf. the Redaktionsblog and the Transitory-I blog on the workshop!). I very much enjoyed our discussions and the friendly, interdisciplinary, creative, and inspiring atmosphere! The papers will be published soon on the kakanien-platform. The (rather philosophical) main lines of our discussions were:

- What is self-representation? A process, a constant dialogue within society and with the outside, often a definition ex-negativo through a clear picture of the "other"... (cf. representations of the East and West in the Cold War)

- the East - West dichotomy (how is it used in (self-)representation; how can we avoid or - better - transcend this dichotomy?)

- representation as "Darstellung" and as "Vertretung" (and what about self-representation of non-representative groups?)

- self-representation of groups vs. self-representation of the individual

- symbols in self-representation, the use of space, borders, ...

(These are notes I took during the final wrap-up discussion.)
