[ Call for Papers-Call for Applications ]

The Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology will hold a workshop on "Eastern Christianities in Anthropological Perspective" from 23th to 25th September 2005.

The planned conference will address the following themes:

  • Religious Change in the context of (post)socialism and secularisation.
Comparative proposals concerning non-socialist societies in which “secularization” is far advanced are also welcome.
  • Centers and peripheries.
Using ethnographic examples, such as the Greek Catholics in Central Europe, the conference wishes to pay close attention to Christianity’s internal boundaries in the context of wider geopolitical and cultural debates.
  • The relation between secular and divine power.
What lies at the core of relations between the state and religion in postsocialist countries, and how (if at all) do their dilemmas differ from those of other states?

Welcome are papers from social scientists who have carried out research in any setting involving Eastern Christians.
Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be submitted by 31 st March 2005.
Please address all proposals and other enquiries to Chris Hann.
