SEE and-in the media

[ SEE and-in the media ]

The weekly Albanian newspaper in English, Tirana Times , offers news about politics, arts, culture, economy etc. as well as analysis to topics on or related to Albania. It is the first Albanian newspaper for the English speaking community and has been launched in February this year.

Its aim is to “fill the void” of information in English about Albania. One – and often the only - thing people know about Albania is that nobody knows anything about it – a characteristic example is the almost famous dialogue in the film“Wag the dog” (1997) – the American president and his spin doctor are looking for a country where their fictional war should take place, and when Albania is suggested, the question “Why Albania?” comes up, the spin doctor’s response is “Why not? Nobody knows anything about Albania.”.

The impact of this image is still a question of current interest, also regarding future developments of economy and society in Albania, and a matter of concern to “Tirana Times”.
In the recently published interview “Albanians need to tell the world who they really are”, Majd Nuri Shafiq, an Albanian American living in Tirana, addresses exactly that topic – certainly an informative and interesting read for anybody interested in this “neglected” country.
