Independent Research Grant: Modernity and Identity
The Centre for Advanced Study Sofia, Bulgaria


with the financial cooperation of The National Science Fund at the Ministry of Education and Science

The Centre for Advance Study Sofia is announcing a Call for Application for 3 nine-month scholarships in 2009 for young Bulgarian researchers in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Applicants must be doctoral students, or hold a Ph.D. title.

Description:

The Fellowship Programme’s aim is the support of independent research projects of young Bulgarian researchers / academics working in the field of humanities and social studies. There are no disciplinary, methodological and thematic restrictions for the project proposals. As a general rule, they have to be oriented towards the broad chronological and conceptual boundaries of the “Modernity / Modernities” and “Identity / Identities” in an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective. The projects’ evaluation will be made primarily on the individual academic character of the applicants based on their academic portfolio and the innovative aspects of the projects.

The Centre will award the selected researchers with nine-month grants for the periods 01.03. – 31.07. and 01.09. – 31.12. 2009 consisting of monthly stipend of 600 Euro (tax included), additional funding for participation in international workshop or conference (transportation, accommodation and fee), working place in the premises of The Centre, library and electronic resources access and last, but not least - to take part in the ongoing scientific events organized by the Centre for Advanced Study.

Application Requirements:

• Doctoral students in the last stage of their research project or holders of a Ph.D. title in the field of humanities and social sciences;
• The candidates have to be under 45 years of age as of the beginning of the fellowship period;
• The candidates have to be Bulgarian citizens.

Previous international academic experience and publications in prestigious scientific journals / editions is an advantage.

Working Language:

The major parts of the academic activities at the Centre are held in English and the good command in it is a prerequisite for the fellow’s integration within the existing research teams and ongoing seminars and discussion ateliers. The final paper of the research project also has to be submitted and published in English. For these reasons only the candidates with good English language skills will be considered for selection. The submission of a certificate for the language level of command is recommended.

The application documents have to be sent by e-mail and to include the following:

1. Research project (not ore than 2000 words) presenting:
• brief description of the proposed research (subject, sources);
• methodology;
• research hypothesis (advantages, shortcomings, risks, ways to overcome them within the research, contribution)
• selected bibliography (10-15 publications) on the existing research of the particular theme.
2. CV and publication list;
3. It is recommended to include author’s text (part of the dissertation, publication, etc.) – not more than 25 pages;
4. Two letters of recommendation by renowned scholars (scanned / faxed / sent by regular mail / sent by e-mail by the letter writer).

Deadline:

The application deadline is 31.01.2009.

Selection:

The selection of the candidates will be made by the Academic Advisory Council of the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia, which members are internationally renowned scholars in the field of humanities and social sciences (for the current members of the Academic Advisory Council please visit http://v3.cas.bg/?cy=38). The reviewers of the Academic Advisory Council reserve the right to invite the candidates for an interview in the case of arbitration of equally evaluated projects.

The selection results will be announced by 20.02.2009 by e-mail and on the Centre’s webpage www.cas.bg.

Selection Criteria:

• the excellence of the candidate’s academic portfolio and publications, participation in international projects;
• original and innovative research project;
• interdisciplinary approach;
• comparativity.
