The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Concordia
University, Montreal, is pleased to announce a post-doctoral
fellowship in Cosmopolitan Studies.

This is a writing fellowship whose purpose is to provide a scholar
at an early stage of his or her career (normally within 5 years of
completing a doctorate) with an opportunity to spend up to a year
redrafting their doctoral thesis as a monograph for publication. The
scholar will normally already have had at least one shorter piece of
writing accepted for publication, but will not already have a
tenure-track position at a university. The fellowship will normally
run from the beginning of September.

The fellowship is open to any post-doctoral scholar whose work
addresses 'cosmopolitanism', broadly defined. He or she might have a
doctorate in social or cultural anthropology, sociology, psychology,
philosophy, literature, politics, history, or a related discipline,
and be interested to take forward a project that inquires into 'the
human' as a singularity over and above proximal categorizations of
nation, ethnicity, class, religiosity, gender and so on.

The writing project might be ontological in character (defining the
human), or methodological (gaining access to the human), or
political-cum-moral (securing the human). It might address, for
instance: global citizenship; human rights as global discourse;
trans-nationalism and supra-nationalism; the city as global space;
home and movement; liberalism and communitarianism; humanism and
universal values; agency, artistry, empathy as human capacities and
practices; individuality and embodiment; the individual as a global
actor; freedom as a global political project.

Applicants are encouraged to visit the website of the Concordia
Centre for Cosmopolitan Studies at:

Job Description
The successful candidate will, during the tenure of the fellowship:

*complete a publishable manuscript from work undertaken for a PhD;
*submit a book proposal to a publisher;
*prepare a bid for further research funding from an external funding body;
*liaise with the Director of the Concordia Centre for Cosmopolitan
Studies, provide progress reports as requested, and undertake small
amounts of work for the Centre as appropriate;
*give a seminar presentation near the beginning of the fellowship to
the Concordia University Department of Sociology and Anthropology;
*have the opportunity (with extra remuneration) to teach a senior
undergraduate course in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology
on a topic of the candidate's choice.

The fellowship will offer a salary of $35,000 Canadian dollars.
Office space will be provided, use of a computer, access to email
and the internet, and to Concordia University Library.

How to Apply
Applications should include three copies of the following:
i) a letter of up to two pages summarising the case for the
applicant's appointment;
ii) a full curriculum vitae;
iii) three letters of reference (one of which should be from the PhD
supervisor);
iv) details (up to three pages) of the writing plans to be carried
out during the fellowship (this might take the form of a draft book
proposal, with chapter summaries, intended market, and so on);
v) one or two short samples of written work, such as a chapter of
the doctoral thesis or an article submitted for publication.
