Today and tomorrow a very interesting international conference The Challenge of the New Populismis organized by the Centre for Liberal Strategies and the Open Society Institute – Sofia is taking place at Grand Hotel Sofia.
The new populism is the general condition of the political today. Its essential feature is that diverse and opposing groups in society identify the structural conflict in the modern politics not as one between the left and the right – or any other competing world visions – but between “the people” and “the elite”, both perceived as homogeneous entities.

The purpose of the conference is to bring together leading academics, politicians and civic activists to discuss what to make out of this new populist condition. Is the rise of the new populism a danger for democracy or is it an opportunity for the return of a genuine political discourse?

Welcome to the [Sofia] weblog, a part of the Kakanien Revisited weblog network. The Team - Dimiter, Assen and Mira - all three PhD students in the Department of History and Theory of Culture at the Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" will try to create an image - although sometimes a faceted and incoherent one - of the Bulgarian academia, culture, ongoing events, ideas, realities and virtual spaces. All of you - our readers - are warmheartedly invited to join us in this endeavor with your comments and suggestions.
