Pierre Nora's großes und einflussreiches Sammelwerk "Les Lieux de Mémoire" erzählt die Geschichte Frankreichs als ein Mosaik von Erinnerungsorten. Davon ausgehend wurden "Orte des Gedächtnisses" zumeist im Zusammenhang einer national ausgerichteten Geschichtsschreibung dargestellt. Die Beiträge des Bandes "Transnationale Gedächtnisorte in Zentraleuropa" wählen einen anderen Zugang: Sie gehen von der Annahme prinzipiell transnationaler Provenienz und Relevanz der Identifikatoren von Erinnerungsorten aus, die freilich instrumentalisierbar sind und immer wieder vereinnahmt werden. Als paradigmatisches Forschungsfeld dient Zentraleuropa: Aufgrund der pluralistischen Verfasstheit dieser europäischen Großregion lassen sich hier zahlreiche Beispiele für den transnationalen Charakter von Gedächtnisorten finden. Pierre Nora's large and influential volume "Les Lieux de Mémoire" narrates the history of France as a mosaic of memory sites. The "Sites of Memory" were presented with respect to a nationally oriented historiography. The papers of the volume "Transnationale Gedächtnisorte in Zentraleuropa“ / “Transnational Sites of Memory in Central Europe" chose another approach: They proceed on the presumption of transnational provenience and relevance of identifiers of memory sites which are subject to exploitation and to a repetitive collection. Central Europe serves as a paradigmatic research field: On the basis of the pluralistic composition of this huge European region one can find numerous examples of a transnational character of memory sites. Containing papers by Jacques Le Rider, Rudolf Jaworski, Ernst Bruckmüller, Michel Espagne etc.
