For the heterogeneous, multi-ethnic countries of the Habsburg Monarchy, books represented a hitherto much ignored communication network, which was vital for the transfer of knowledge before the invention of modern mass media. It is the goal of the Austrian Science Fund's research project 'The Book Market in the Habsburg Monarchy (1750-1850)' to investigate this book culture in its regional differentiation and cultural interplay. The manifold aspects of the network of book culture are to be discussed: their organisation via the transregional market and the way this network was steered by the conditions imposed by the state on text circulation; the function of the book, ranging from cultural uniformisation with the aim of modernisation on the one hand and national identity formation on the other; the role of the book-seller as cultural broker, who created or disrupted the link to cultural development as the agent of reading material; and finally the network of readers and the public they constitute. The opposing pole to the public is that of authorship and its conditions, such as the highly varying opportunities of publication in the different regions and the censor's mechanisms of control.
