Migration and Return Migration: The Case of Italian Migrants in Germany

Der Beitrag basiert auf theoretischen und empirischen Studien über Migranten in Deutschland. Soziologische und ökonomische Ansätze der Migrationsforschung werden diskutiert. Der theoretische Schwerpunkt liegt auf den sozialen Netzwerken von Migranten sowohl im Herkunfts- als auch Zielland. Der Einfluss des sozialen Kapitals auf Migrationsentscheidungen und den Prozess der Kettenmigration wird in einem Modell skizziert. Der Effekt von ortsspezifischem sozialem Kapital bei der Immigration und bei der Rückkehr wird anhand von amtlichen Daten über italienische Migranten in Deutschland und Daten aus Befragungen dargestellt.
The paper is based on theoretical and empirical studies on migrants in Germany. Sociological and economic approaches in migration research are discussed. The theoretical focus lies on migrant’s social networks in the country of origin or country of destination. The influence of social capital on migration decision-making and the process of chain migration is outlined. The impact of location specific social capital on migration and on return migration is shown using official data on Italian migrants in Germany and survey data.
