Zentraleuropa - Mitteleuropa - Ostmitteleuropa. Zur Definitionsproblematik einer historischen Großregion

Die vorliegende Problemskizze befasst sich mit den definitorischen Unschärfen und Untiefen, die in fast allen Sprachen bei der Charakterisierung Zentraleuropas als Geschichtsraum auftauchen. Dabei wird grundsätzlich davon ausgegangen, dass diese Schwierigkeiten für sich genommen schon zu den zentralen Charakteristika dieser historischen Mittler- und Übergangsregion zählen.
Zentraleuropa lässt sich weder exakt geographisch abstecken, noch überzeitlich als ein Kontinuum begreifen, sondern nur in bestimmten Epochen fassen und vornehmlich in kulturellen Prägungen nachweisen.
The present article deals with the problems of defining the term "Central Europe" and naming its characteristics. In almost all languages there is a certain lack of clarity and depth when attempting to describe Central Europe as a historical entity. It is however a basic premise that it is just these difficulties that form one of the central characteristics of this region, which through the ages has functioned as a place of mediation and transition.
You can neither mark the exact geographical borders of Central Europe, nor understand it as a continuum through history. All that is possible is to grasp it in certain historical periods and then mainly through its cultural manifestations.
