Österreich-Ungarn im Konzert der Kolonialmächte. Die militärischen Interventionen der Kriegsmarine

Autoren

Andreas Bilgeri,  Wien

During the 19th century the Austro-Hungarian navy was used not only as an instrument for maintaining the prestige of the Habsburgian monarchy but also as an instrument of foreign policy. It provided the opportunity to act side by side with the classic colonial powers in an imperial manner. Military interventions together with the other big powers took place 1840 in Syria, 1860 in Libanon and 1897 in Crete. The most prominent example is the suppression of the so-called "Boxer Rebellion" in China in 1900. Those deliberate interventions into the sovereignity of a foreign state will be analysed in terms of its imperial-colonial character and the self-concept of Austria-Hungary as a worldwide acting power among powers will be depicted.
