Kakanien revisited is a platform for interdisciplinary CE and SEE studies and networking. The platform has been founded in 2001 and is supported by the Austrian Ministry for Science and Research (BM.W_F) and the University of Vienna. Articles, essays, book reviews, and materials are published as PDFs with abstracts in two (or more) languages in HTML. Questions, propositions, critique, as well as submissions are welcome at redaktion@kakanien.ac.at. Since its implementation in 2001 Kakanien revisited went through different phases of design, programming, functions and activities.

03/2001-03/2004

Phase 1

The internet platform Kakanien revisited went online on October 1, 2001 after approx. six months of preparation. The concept stemmed from Peter Plener, funding and support came from the Austrian Ministry for Science and Education (bm:bwk) and the University of Vienna; programming: Meta-Ware, design: picto. The platform started with an extensive publication's area (case studies, theoretical contributions, materials, and book reviews) in PDF with permanent URL, and also with a service area, including monthly newsletters (online publication and push service), annotated link lists, a bibliography, a calendar of events, and a multilingual mission statement.

Professional publication, information and networking service inured to the benefit of young scholars, esp. from Central European countries. Revised, as well as first publications followed the principles of Open Access from the very start. Cooperations with universities and research institutes in Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Romania, the Czech Republic, Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, Canada, and Serbia-Montenegro have been established.

Phase 2

In the framework of CONEX-II (Cooperation and Networking for Excellence), a programme of the 6. EU-Framework, Kakanien revisited asked for submissions for a weblog forum in order to enhance scientific communication in Central and Southeast Europe. Twelve weblogs of international young scholars started discussions on relevant media, scientific and cultural topics, distributed information about events, new book releases, etc.

The application of social software and communication technologies strengthened the online presence of Austrian and Southeast European, finally of all-over European research. Above that, with the biannual workshop series "Emergence | Emergenzen", the platform continued organizing scientific events and research activities. The respective conference papers and project outcomes were documented and distributed via the platform.

05/2006-06/2007

Phase 3

Owing to further funding by the Austrian Ministry for Science and Education (bm:bwk), the publication, networking, communication, and blogging could be continued. Additionally, the focus on Southeast Europe was strengthened, and further conferences were organised and held.

07/2007-12/2009

Phase 4

In July, the platform gained new funding by the Austrian Ministry for Science and Research (BM.W_F). After remarkable redesign (Gábor Békési, Amt 7) and thorough renewal of its code base (János Békési, Meta-Ware), the platform Kakanien reloaded was re-launched with Ursula Reber as new acting director. A scientific board was established, the conference and networking activities were enforced, and the thematic scope of publications considerably broadened via the introduction of Digital Anthologies on special topics. The introduction of the eRoom offered new possibilities for project documentation, networking, information, and project management. Further, the weblog forum was restructured, and past events, conference programmes and calls for papers were archived.

01/2010-03/2013

Phase 5

In January 2010 the support of the Ministery for Science and Research (BM.W_F) ran out. For optimising the effectiveness of the project the editorial and technological background as well as the layout of the articles has been switched to LaTeX and Open Office. Now the platform is conducted on a voluntary basis. Services like newsletter, calendar, weblogs, and events are not to be continued.

Phase 6

"Kakanien revisited // cenex" is a registered society (members and mission as before). The platform has been transferred from the University of Vienna's server to the server of Meta-Ware and continues the platform's mission as an scientific online archive. The quotation of all articles and materials published since October 2001, as well as the principles of Open Access stay unchanged.
