Re-thinking Culture and Literature: Transnational and Comparative Spaces

Anliegen der Konferenz ist, nachdrücklich die Grenzen des heutigen Blickes auf Literatur und Kultur zu überdenken. Die nicht-normativen und beides einschließenden Ansichten von "Literatur" und "Kultur" sind nicht neu, jedoch mit Hilfe der PoststrukturalistInnen und der FeministInnen, die das Bedürfnis nach der Grenzüberschreitung von Kultur und Nationalsprache vorgebracht haben, erneut theoretisiert worden. Die so von postkolonialen und Gender-TheoretikerInnen in neue Theorien eingebetten Sichtweisen auf Literaturen und Kulturen tragen dazu bei, die ideologischen Unterfütterung kultureller Erfahrung bewusst zu machen. Die Konferenz legt den Schwerpunkt demnach auf eine Bewegung weg vom eher traditionellen Modell der Nationalliteraturgeschichte hin zu einer komparatistischen. Die Konferenz bringt außerdem internationale WissenschaftlerInnen aus dem Bereich der Litertatur-, Kultur-, Film- und Medienwissenschaften, die sich mit deren Geschichte, Praxis und Theorie in der gesamten Bandbreite beschäftigen.
The conference's focus is on rethinking considerably the boundaries of the views upon literature and culture today. The inclusive and non-normative notions of "literature" and "culture" are not new, but they have been theorized anew, with the help of, among others, post-structuralist and feminist thinking that have suggested the need to cross the borders of culture and national language. Newly theorized by post-colonial and gender theorists, the perspectives into literatures and cultures help to make conscious the ideological underpinnings of the cultural experiences. The conference has an emphasis on the move from the more traditional national model of literary history to a comparative one. This conference brings together an international group of scholars in literary, cultural, film, media studies whose work engages with the history, practice, and theory that shapes in a variety of national and regional contexts.
