Altes Universitätsviertel: Erinnerungsraum, Gedächtnisort

Autoren

In ihm lagern u.a.

According to Marc Augé, urban areas "communicate via our own memory, they wake up and challenge it with their own very specific memory. They have got a historical memory: according to modern views on the urbanism, a temporal dimension is given to urban space by threading monuments together." The old, enclosed university quarter in the centre of Vienna is a very good example of such a place where memory is stored and located. There are many distinctive features such as different scientific and intellectual traditions situated in this symbolic space: medieval-scholastic traditions, scientific concepts of Humanism, the baroque tradition of the Society of Jesus, the "modern" understanding of science of the 19th century and finally also the notion of an "Academy of Sciences". These partly inconsistent traditions and concepts can be read in the architecture of the urban space. This study is a contribution to a research programme in the field of studies in culture "Places of Memory" of the "Austrian Academy of Sciences".
