Von Budapest nach Istanbul. Die Via Traiana im Spiegel der Reiseliteratur des 14. bis 16. Jahrhunderts

Die Reiseliteratur des 14. bis 16. Jahrhunderts ist eine wichtige Quelle für die historische Geografie der Via Traiana zwischen Budapest und Konstantinopel. Anhand von Zitaten aus den Reiseberichten lassen sich sowohl der Verlauf als auch der Zustand dieser bedeutenden Verkehrsader Südosteuropas im Großen und Ganzen nachvollziehen. Dieser Aspekt wurde von Jireček in seiner Studie nur beiläufig berücksichtigt, so dass eine umfangreiche Erweiterung desselben notwendig erschien. Nach einer Übersicht der Geschichte der Via Traiana im Zeitraum von der Antike bis 1526 in Kapitel 4.1. mit Hilfe eines breiten Spektrums an Quellen, wird ebendiese lineare Darstellungsweise in Kapitel 4.2. zu Gunsten einer punktuellen, geografischen verlassen, die den Zeitraum von 1526 bis 1600 erfasst. Hierbei kommen die oben erwähnten Zitate aus den Reiseberichten zur Geltung, wobei eine beachtliche Anzahl an Belegen für die Via Traiana gefunden werden konnte. Die Schwerpunkte in der Darstellung der Reisenden liegen bei den Verkehrsknotenpunkten und größeren Siedlungen bzw. Städten entlang der Straße (z.B. bei Niš, Pirot, Dimitrovgrad, Sofija, Plovdiv usw.). Dieses Gerüst an Zeugnissen aus den Reiseberichten bedürfte in Zukunft einer archäologischen Überprüfung vor Ort.
The travel literature from the 14th to the 16th century is an important source for the historical geography of the Via Traiana connecting Budapest and Constantinople. On the basis of quotations from the travel literature it is possible to trace the course and the state of this important communication in South-East Europe on the whole. This aspect was taken casually into consideration by Jire?ek in his study. That is why it was necessary to widen this very aspect. Following an overview on the history of the Via Traiana from antiquity till 1526 in chapter 4.1 by using a vast variety of sources, chapter 4.2 breaks up this linear account in order to use a selective geographical perpective for the period between 1526 and 1600. The above-mentioned quotations from the travel literature are introduced at this point of the book. The considerable number of references on the Via Traiana concentrate on centres and bigger settlements or cities respectively along this road (e.g. near Niš, Pirot, Dimitrovgrad, Sofija, Plovdiv). This frame of quotations from the travel literature forms the basis for further archaeological research and will have to be examined by local archaeological excavations in the future.
