Mit diesem neuen Schwerpunkt beabsichtigt das IFK das Themenfeld "Stadt - Urbanität - urbaner Wandel - Metropolenentwicklung" zum Gegenstand einer umfassenden kulturwissenschaftlichen Analyse zu machen, die gleichermaßen historische, aktuelle wie künftige Veränderungen von Städten, ihren Lebenswelten und Teilkulturen, ihrer Ökonomie, Architektur und Infrastrukturen ins Auge fasst.

Metropolen-Fiktionen: Mythen, Legenden und Narrative der Großstadt
- die Stadt als kultureller Text des Sozialen
- fiktionale und sachliche Narrative (Literatur, Fotografie, Film, Reportage)
- (neue) Medien und Repräsentationen des Urbanen
- Re-reading Classics: von Georg Simmels Die Groß-Städte und das Geistesleben bis hin zu Mike Davis' City of Quartz
- Städtebilder in der (bildenden) Kunst
- Stadt und Gedächtnis, präsente und vergessene, zentrale und periphere Städte
The Modern City from the Perspective of Cultural Studies
With its new research focus the IFK intends to undertake a comprehensive analysis of the phenomenon of the metropolis, encompassing a wide-ranging field of themes: "The City - Urban Change - The Evolution of the Metropolis". The research program will examine past and present as well as future changes in cities and include such varied aspects as daily life and subcultures, economies, architecture, and infrastructures.
