Titel

Comparative Cultural Studies and the Study of Central European Culture - Theory and Application

Autoren

Steven Totosy de Zepetnek,  Boston (USA ), Univ. of Halle-Wittenberg (Germany)

In his paper, the author presents an introduction to the theoretical framework of comparative cultural studies and the notion of "in-between peripherality", followed by some examples of application of the framework and the notion in the study of Central and East European culture and literature. The introduction of the principles of comparative cultural studies includes a brief description of the framework's methodology, the systemic and empirical approach. The author defines Central (and East) European culture - real and/or imagined (B. Anderson) - as an "in-between peripheral" and (post)colonial landscape of culture, historically and culturally determined in time and space. Next, with the objective to exemplify Central and East European culture as represented in literature, the framework and method are applied to samples of second-generation North American Jewish memoirs about Central Europe and to samples of contemporary Eastern German and Hungarian prose.
