The radically altered life-world of the city around 1900 when transposed into the literary text gives rise to a new mode of writing. The perception and apperception of the outer world becomes a dialogical-communicative act in which the perceiving subject is transformed and the subject itself is at the same time inscribed into the perceived. Belyj's novel is constituted of elements of the special narrative mode of 'stream of consciousness': the temporal and spatial linearity is almost fully suspended. The loose series of Ingo Schulze's short stories considers the city at the end of the 20th century as a space in which relations between subjects or between subjects and objects emerge due to a new kind of visual perception. These relations can thoroughly be made linearly "narrative". In the narrative modes of both texts one can trace the specific patterns of perception, which constitute not only the texts but also the narrator referring to the "collective" text of the city. This mode of folding the interactive and communicative actions and reactions is expressed differently both in narrating and perceiving in Belyj's and Schulze's work.
