Peter Stachel).

The 1908 jubilee parade (Kaiserhuldigungsfestzug) on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph's I. accession to the throne must be understood as a site of memory, which was directed to present a "restored" past and the multi-cultural variety of the monarchy. The analysis examines the material aspects (the realisation of the parades), the functional aspects (the passing on of remembrance), and the symbolic aspects (the legitimation of the dynasty and the multiethnic state) of the site of memory and so discovers a whole inventory of remembered elements of the past. Traces of that can be located in later cultural products, for example in the film Der 1. April 2000, produced in 1952 and financed by the Austrian government.

The article stems from the second volume of Speicher des Gedächtnisses (ed. by Moritz Csáky and Peter Stachel).
