Newsletter +73 (10/07) [.pdf] about Reverberations: Fantasy / Fiction / Science is online.

Dear Readers,

The fifth workshop in the Emergence series approaches. On the 5th and 6th of October a small, but excellent program will take place on the theme of the communication of science and the fantastic, especially in the early 20th century (but also to the end of the century). The contributions will be published in the relevant section of Kakanien revisited. Further comments on the contributions are welcome.

At this point, we will point out again the call for paper for the online special issue "Wendejahre - Turning Points" invites you to send in your contributions in German or English before the end of the year.

"Emergence 5" is not the only Kakanien revisited event announced here. The platform’s migration will be ongoing in the background. The new outfit will be put together, and its performance will be tested and optimized. From the first of November, the "new Kakanien revisited" – "Kakanien reloaded" - will be publicly accessible. To celebrate this re-launch, a public presentation will take place on the 7th of November at the BMWF (Federal Ministry of Science and Research) as it was when it was first launched six years ago. We are looking forward to welcoming not only the newly formed Scientific Board, and we also extend this invitation to you!
Information about the board members will be posted on the new platform of Kakanien revisited/reloaded, in the “Impressum” section.

In September, the monthly editorial work proved fruitful. In the Case Studies this month, István Fried wrote about inter-media and inter-textuality of the Hungarian and Austrian in the modern period in his article "Ungarische Literatur, Modernität, österreichische Literatur". Of the upcoming issue by Peter Lang/New York) "WechselWirkungen. The Political, Social, and Cultural Impact of the Austrian-Hungarian Occupation on Bosnia-Herzegovina, 1878-1918" two other contributors have previously published their articles here: Robert J. Donia deals with the metaphor of the inner-European (post-)colonialism and in his article, "The Proximate Colony. Bosnia-Herzegovina under Austro-Hungarian Rule", shows that the metaphor intersects the lived reality. Isa Blumi examines the role of the Albanians in the dynamics of the hegemonic conflict between the Ottoman and Habsburg Empires in the Balkans. In his contribution "Seeing Beyond the River Drin. Sarajevo, Ottoman Albanians and Imperial Rivalry in the Balkans after 1878", he shows the agency of the Albanians within this dynamic.

Under Materials, the programs for "Emergenzen 5 // Wissenschaftskommunikation und Fantastik 1900/2000" organized by ELTE Budapest and Kakanien revisited (the abstracts of the presentations and the cv's are to be found under Materials / Others), for the symposium "100 Jahre Institut für Osteuropäische Geschichte" (100 Years of the Institute for Eastern-European History) organized by the Institut für Osteuropäische Geschichte and for the conference "Medienpolitik und 'Europäisierung' in der Mediengesetzgebung" of the Moldova Institut and the Centrul pentru Jurnalism Independent, as well as the for symposium "Terror und Erlösung. Robert Musil und die 1920er Jahre" organized by FU Berlin. Finally, there is also the program of the multi-disciplinary workshop "Kafka in Frankenstein. Böhmische Nerven-Politik zwischen 1890 und 1938" by the Universiät Ústí nad Labem to be found.

The Political, Social, and Cultural Impact of the Austrian-Hungarian Occupation on Bosnia-Herzegovina, 1878-1918" haben zwei weitere Beiträger ihre Artikel vorab publiziert: Robert J. Donia greift die Metapher des innereuropäischen (Post)Kolonialismus auf und zeigt in "The Proximate Colony. In seinem Beitrag "Seeing Beyond the River Drin.

Session at the IACES" [Deadline: 20.12.2007] von Wei Xing, für die Konferenz "From Traditional Attire to Modern Dress: Modes of Identification, Modes of Recognition in the Balkans (16th-21st Centuries)" [Deadline: 31.01.2008] des New Europe College und für die beiden Projekte "Nation as Problem and Solution & Historical Revisionism in Serbia" [Deadline: 01.11.2007] des Youth Center CK13.
