Vienna Review Die Zeit and the Czech Modernist Movement

Research project of the Masaryk Institute and Archives of Academy of Sciences of Czech republic, v.v.i., supported by the Czech Science Foundation

The aim of the project is an interdisciplinary comparison of the importance of the Vienna Review Die Zeit with regard to the cultural and political development of Czech elites in the context of the modernization of social processes, the creation of artistic modernist movements and Czech-German relations at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. This interdisciplinary research (involving literary history, culturology and political history) is based on the programmatically supranational character of Die Zeit and on the overlap of culture and politics on its pages. The project will primarily consist of an analysis of relations between the representatives of Czech literary and political modernism (e.g. J. S. Machar, F. V. Krejčí, V. Mrštík, T. G. Masaryk and K. Kramář) and the Die Zeit circle (e.g. H. Bahr, I. Singer and H. Kanner). The specialist literature has not as yet devoted sufficient attention to these relations, and there is no seminal work of any kind on the Die Zeit review. For this reason too, the project will be realized in collaboration with Czech and foreign (especially Austrian) historians and literary historians. The project should contribute to the debate on the nature of cultural and social transfers in Central Europe at the end of the 19th century. There should be hold an international conference on this theme in Prague in autumn 2009. The results of research and discussion will be summarized, particularly in the final Czech-German publication that will contain not only part of the studies, but also source material and a bibliography. Cooperation in the project: Vratislav Doubek, Kurt Ifkovits, Lucie Kostrbová, Martin Kučera.

Vídeňská revue Die Zeit a česká moderna

Výzkumný projekt Masarykova ústavu a Archivu Akademie věd České republiky, v.v.i., podpořený Grantovou agenturou České republiky

Cílem projektu je mezioborové srovnání významu vídeňské revue Die Zeit pro kulturní a politický rozvoj českých elit v kontextu modernizace společenských procesů, utváření uměleckých modernistických hnutí a česko-německých vztahů na přelomu 19. a 20. století. Mezioborově (literárněhistoricky, kulturologicky, politicko-historicky) založený výzkum vychází z programově nadnárodní povahy Die Zeit a z prolínání kultury a politiky na jejích stránkách. Podstatou projektu bude analýza vztahů představitelů české literární a politické moderny (J. S. Machar, F. V. Krejčí, V. Mrštík, T. G. Masaryk, K. Kramář ad.) s okruhem Die Zeit (H. Bahr, I. Singer, H. Kanner ad.). Výsledky výzkumu a diskusí budou shrnuty zejména v závěrečné česko-německé publikaci, která bude vedle části studií obsahovat i pramenný materiál a bibliografii. Spolupracovníci projektu: Vratislav Doubek, Kurt Ifkovits, Lucie Kostrbová, Martin Kučera.
