The subject of the 5th workshop of the long term research program Modernity - Vienna and Central Europe around 1900 was 'cultural transfer'. After an overview of recent studies to this topic, possible inputs from cultural anthropology and from the translation studies were discussed, as well as the terms 'acculturation' and 'assimilation'. The research program includes a couple of projects dealing with cultural transfers, especially the projects on the mediators of culture, Hermann Bahr and Franz Blei, and the project on the transfer between Ljubljana, Vienna and Paris in the science of history. This was following by three presentations: one pointing out the parallel arguments in the writings of Bernard Bolzano and Eduard Hanslick, another the transfer in the education system in Central Europe, and the third how marginalisation and emigration of scientists and scholars contributed to cultural transfer.
