Die Entwicklung der Musikethnologie während der zweiten Hälfte des 19. und zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts wird durch 4 verschiedene Aspekte charakterisiert: 1. Die enge Verbindung zwischen Ästhetik und Psychologie, die sich insbes. in der österreichischen Forschungstradition niederschlägt, 2. einen paradigmatischen Wechsel von den Evolutionstheorien zur Relativität ästhetischer Wertvorstellungen, 3. den wesentlichen Einfluss der technischen Entwicklungen im Zuge der Erfindung des Phonographen sowie 4. die Interdependenz zwischen Musikgeschichte und Musikethnologie.

The development of ethnomusicology during the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century is characterised by 4 different aspects: 1. the connection between aesthetics and psychology, especially significant for the Austrian scientific tradition, kindling the interest in ethnomusicology, 2. a paradigmatic change from evolution theories to the relativity of aesthetical judgements, 3. the important influence of the technical developments through the invention of the phonograph, 4. the influence of scientific discussion on the development of contemporary music.
