The volume contains the results of the workshop Habitus, Identity and the Exiled Dispositions, held from 29. to 30. September 2006 at the Institute for Philosophy of the University of Vienna. The aim of the workshop was to discuss philosophical, sociological, literature and cultural historical aspects of the intellectual migration from Hungary to Austria and to the West in the 20th century.

The volume contains ten lectures. In the first part, entitled Migration, Anna Wessely presents a typology of migration, differentiating between refugees, emigrants and cosmopolitic nomads. Karoly Kokai discusses the interconnections of cultural history and migration studies. Gabor Felkai analyses the construction of the “foreigner” in the work of classical authors of german sociology. Beata Thomka discusses the cultural identity of the intellectual migrants form South-Eastern Europe and from the Balkan into the West. Katharina Brizic applies a linguistic model to understand the relation between identity and success in school performance of migrant children in Vienna.

The second part of the volume, Hungarian Artists and Scientists in Exile, contains an essay by Amalia Kerekes on the journalistic work of Bela Balazs during his exile in Vienna. Zoltan Peter analyses the dispositions of Lajos Kassak before he went into exile in a field theoretical context. Gabor Pallo presents a survey on natural scientists with hungarian origin who emigrated in the 20. century.

The third part of the book, Politics and Exile, contains a text by David Kettler on the antifascist ideology of german intellectuals in New York. Pal Dereky reports on the scandal organised by hungarian exile students during the meeting of the Word Youth Festival in Vienna 1959.

A Habitus, Identität und die exilierten Dispositionen címen januárban megjelent könyv a 2006. szept.

Felkai Gábor a klasszikus német szociológia “idegen” konstrukcióit vizsgálja. Thomka Beáta a Délkelet-Európából és a Balkánról Nyugat- és Közép-Európába érkező migránsok kulturális azonosságát elemzi. Katharina Brizic bécsi migránsok gyerekeinek iskolai eredményeit egy nyelvtudományi alapon felállított modellel ábrázolja.

A második, Magyar művészek és tudósok emigrációja című részben Kerekes Amália Balázs Béla bécsi emigráns éveiben keletkezett kultúrpolitikai publicisztikájáról ad áttekintést. Péter Zoltán Kassák Lajos emigráció előtti diszpozícióit mezőelméleti összefüggésben elemzi. Palló Gábor a 20. század folyamán Magyarországról emigrált természettudósok pályáját tekinti át.

A kötet harmadik, Politika és exil című részében David Kettler New York-i német emigráns értelmiségiek antifasiszta ideológiáját tárgyaló írását olvashatjuk. A kötetet záró szövegben Deréky Pál az 1959-es bécsi Világifjúsági Találkozón 56-os magyar menekült diákok által okozott botrányokról közöl dokumentációs anyagot és elemzést.
