Czernowitzer Geschichten. Über eine städtische Kultur in Mittel(Ost)-Europa

Autoren

The author traces the development of a town culture of Cernovitz as a Central European enclave in an area ruled by archaic order. He depicts the processes of a socio-cultural modernisation, in which social, ethnic, linguistic, religious and territorial contradictions clashed. The book treats milestones of a history that began with the 1775 inclusion in Austria of the northern Moldavian territory known as Bukovina at the Viennese court. This area remains until today a "place of remembrance" in the collective memory of East and Central Europe, not least due to the formative "Jewish" influence on the emergence and continuation of that German language bourgeois "world" of Cernovitz that has been lost for ever.
