Adiaphorische Räume

Autoren

Ursula Reber / Marc Ries,  Wien

The article is in search for weakly coded, so-called 'adiaphoric spaces' that don't necessarily produce otherness. Thereby, starting at a typical situation of globalisation or colonialism and its geo-aesthetic strategies, the trade with pepper, first outlined as historical fact and secondly analyzed with the example of a contemporary board game that introduces the players into everyday-colonialistic practices the article turns toward a positive definition of the concept of 'adiaphoric spaces': In analysing the Greek word adiáphoron (= neither good nor bad) the indifferentia specifica of social spaces oscillating between activity and passivity is determined. In opposition to the ordinary concept of dichotomy the authors use a tripartite logic, whereby alternately one part is functioning as a quasi-active medium preventing the formation of concrete interests. This medium is needed to speak of de-centred spaces or situations that are free from hegemony. Finally, the authors try to apply the concept on cinema and two different movies.
