The Challenge of Central Europe to the Historiography of Art

Ausgehend von einem kürzlich erschienenen Essay von Jürgen Kocka, untersucht der Beitrag die Frage, inwieweit Mittelost- bzw. Zentraleuropa neue Herausforderungen an bisher unangefochtene Thesen der Kunstgeschichte über die frühmoderne Periode darstellen. Die Veränderungen der letzten Zeit in Europa haben eine neue Situation kreiert, die das Studium der Kunstgeschichte wesentlich überdenken lässt: Statt in nationalen Begrifflichkeiten zu denken, müssen nunmehr andere Vorstellungen herangezogen, das Konzept Mittelosteuropa selbst hinterfragt und eine weiter gefasste Vorstellung von Zentraleuropa - das auch Österreich und Deutschlang umfasst - in den Vordergrund gerückt werden. Nur dadurch kann auch eine weiter gefasste europäische Betrachtung künstlerischen Austausches und Vernetzung sowie eine Neubewertung bisheriger Epochen-Begriffe ermöglicht werden, die für einen sinnvollen Neuzugang zu einer Reihe grundlegender Aspekte der europäischen Kunsthistoriografie unabdingbar geworden sind.
Taking its cue from a recent essay by Jürgen Kocka, this paper considers how East Central Europe presents a challenge to basic assumptions about the history of art in the early modern period. Recent changes on the European continent have created a new situation in which the study of art history may be rethought. Instead of thinking in national terms, other notions may be employed. Among them, the concept of East Central Europe itself should be challenged, in favour of a more inclusive notion of Central Europe that takes into account Austria and Germany. More broadly, Central Europe is also enmeshed in a broader European artistic situation. Similarly, dealing with Central Europe causes reconsideration of period terms in art history. Thus the challenge of East Central Europe provokes newer approaches to some basic issues concerning both the geography and history of art.
