Women's Visibility in Language as a Human Rights Issue. Challenges to Central and Eastern Europe in the Process of European Integration

The paper discusses the necessity of developing a gender-based approach to linguistic human rights. The main problem addressed here is the socio-economic effect of gender-biased language, particularly its negative impact on gender segregation on the labor market. The major thesis of the paper rests on the idea that the linguistic form of gender discrimination is a global problem and therefore demands a universal, coordinated approach on the level of international legislation. As a possible way to outlaw sexist language practices the paper suggests to introduce the concept of linguistic rights of women and men or gender-related linguistic rights and to regard discriminatory language not only as a violation of ethical norms of political correctness in serparate countries, but primarily as a violation of linguistic human rights worldwide.
