Growing Networks. From the structure of the Internet to a strategy against AIDS

"Networks" is not only a fashionable word, they provide the scientific framework to describe complex systems of many interacting units. Examples include the world-wide web, the internet, social networks, flight connections, the economy or cell metabolism. During the last five years, the science of networks has undergone a dramatic development. Due to the enormous increase in computational capacity, a huge amount of information has accumulated about many complex networks and it has emerged that the commonly used mathematical models fail to describe most of their properties. New concepts and models have emerged, mostly emerging from statistical physics. Our aim is to present in a simple way some of the new results as well as their possible consequences to our everyday life.
