In the early 20th-century discourse of nationalism "Spirit and Soul" play an important part, that should not be underestimated. The characters of Musil's "Man Without Qualities" also use them as a pattern of thought and argumentation in more or less differing ways. The world of "Kakania", as it ist shown in the novel, is imbued with a certain, characteristic "nationalism of Sprit and Soul", that is unambiguously pronounced through Hans Sepp, but is also hidden behind Diotima's transnational activities and Count Leinsdorf's efforts for the invention of a multi-cultural and transnational crowd of nations, which are loyally devoted to Kakania's Emperor. All characters are similar in their way of heavily struggling to catch an idea. However, their thoughts stay circular and indistinct, and the great 'occurence', which is desperately hoped for, never comes. The paranoid murderer Moosbrugger becomes a symbol and substitute for Kakania, because his behaviour is characterized through the complete lack of rationalization, every action is pure 'occurency'. On the other hand the pair of Ulrich/Agathe can be understood as symbolizing an alternative way of 'occurency'. However, there are some parallels between Ulrich/Agathe and the protagonists of the "Parallelaktion", since they also search together or on their own for an event - that never comes.
