Subject of the article is the imagology of nations, as it can be read in Doderer's novels "Die Strudlhofstiege" and "Die Dämonen". Germany and Hungary receive the main interest, because they are used in contrast to the Austrian protagonists. Germany plays the role of "Apperzeptionsverweigerer", of the country that underlies and forces modernization, ideologization and fascism.

The Hungarians are presented as the ruling nation in the east, contrasted by other eastern, slavic nations, who are described as chaotic primitives on a very low level of civilization and culturalization. On the other part the Hungarians as "children of nature" are the first victims of German fascist ideologization.
