After extensive migrations of Serbian people, since the end of the 17th century, a majority of Serbian citizens lived outside their country. They settled territories of the Habsburg Monarchy, north of the rivers Sava and Danube. The separation resulted in specific strategies for the unification of the Serbian people, for establishing a national state, a national cultural and artistic life, that is, the national identity itself. The strategies were based, above all, on Serbian citizens' gatherings and the foundation of national institutions.

The political and cultural-artistic institutions, such as Ujedinjena omladina srpska (United Serbian Youth), choral societies, and reading-rooms, had a very significant role in that process. This paper considers the work of those institutions, especially choral societies, in the Habsburg Monarchy's multi-ethnic environments, in towns in the Banat, such as Pančevo and Veliki Bečkerek. The oldest known Serbian choral society was established in Pančevo - Pančevačko srpsko crkveno pevačko društvo (Serbian church choral society in Pančevo), 1838.

In these towns, different national communities (Serbian, German, Hungarian) formed their own cultural spaces respectively: they founded their churches, schools, periodicals, reading-rooms, as well as choral societies, fostering national ideology in their national languages. Thus, the artistic work of Serbian choral societies in the multi-ethnic towns of Habsburg Monarchy was, actually, of secondary importance compared with their cultural and political activities. The repertoire of different national communities' choral societies also reflected national ideology, being based on the arrangements of folk melodies of a given nation, or the partial songs of national composers.

Veoma značajnu ulogu u tome imale su političke i kulturno-umetničke institucije poput Ujedinjene omladine srpske, pevačkih društava i čitaonica. U tekstu se razmatra rad ovih institucija, posebno pevačkih društava, u multietničkim sredinama u Habzburškoj monarhiji, odnosno u Banatu, u Pančevu i Velikom Bečkereku.
