The study analyzes two radically different ways of constructing and deconstructing a specific Ukrainian national identity in two forms of the Ukrainian political song: in the songs of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen during and after World War I on the one hand, one can find discursive strategies of evoking a future Ukrainian state by defining the claimed territory (from Mukacheve in the West up to Kiev in the East), by glorifying central heroes of Ukrainian history (e.g., the hetman Ivan Mazepa) and by introducing the metaphor of Ukraine as a mother for the Sich Riflemen. The contemporary performances of Verka Serdjuchka, on the other hand, are rooted in a broader post-Soviet context and are directed in a deconstructive, ironical way against common Russian stereotypes towards the Ukrainians, but they also make fun of Soviet everyday life and its myths. By comparing the songs of the Galician Riflemen in the years of World War I and Serdjuchka's burlesque videos, it is possible to show the discursive mechanisms of constructing and deconstructing Ukrainian national identity at the beginning and the end of the 20th century.
