Titel

Poetry and History in Montenegro: Njegoš and the Construction of a Collective Memory

Autoren

Jahrhundert.

Sometimes literature is exclusively used as a tool for interpreting historical past, as it happened to Petar II Petrović Njegoš "The Mountain Wreath". The author argues against this usage of literature and elaborates on the mythologised perception of Montenegrin history. The central topic of this article is the issue of the multi-layered nature of Montenegrin identity and the resorting to epic poetry in explaining its contested character. The analysis of the multiple levels of appropriaton accross the time of literary works of the Montenegrin nineteenth century ruler, Petar II Petrović Njegoš is used as the vehicle for exploring the internal dynamics of the process of identity construction in Montenegro.
