The Social Structure of Football Fans in the City of Split

Forschungen über Fussballfans in Kroatien haben bisher nur die extreme Gruppe der Fans, die man als organisiert bezeichnen könnte, behandelt. Es gibt aber eine weitaus größere Gruppe von Fans, die keine Ausschreitungen verursacht und als unorganisiert bezeichnet werden könnte.
Diese Studie soll die sozialen Merkmale der unorganisierten Fans im Vergleich zu denen der organisierten Fans untersuchen. Es wurden signifikante Unterschiede zwischen organisierten und unorganisierten Fans in Split gefunden. Diese betrafen allerdings nicht alle strukturellen Charakteristiken. Geschlecht, Lebensstandard, Beruf, die Selbsteinschätzung des Lebensstandards, Club-Mitgliedschaft, Selbsteinschätzung als passionierter Fan und wie oft Spiele besucht wurden waren Merkmale, die eine signifikante Verbindung zu der Fan-Gruppe aufzeigten. Andererseits waren Familienstatus, Geburstort, Arbeitsstatus, Alter und Bildungslevel nicht signifikant.
All previous research of football fans in Croatia was exclusively conducted on one special sector of fans (the extreme ones), which could be called organised. There is, however, a much larger group that does not produce excesses and which could be called the unorganised fans.
The main purpose of this paper is to discover the social characteristics of unorganised fans in order to compare them with the organised ones. The basic results of the analysis is that there are some significant differences between organised and unorganised fans in the city of Split. However, these are not related to all, but rather only to some structural characteristics. Thus, gender, level of living standard, occupation, self-evaluation of living standard, membership in the club, frequency of attending the matches as well as self-consideration as passionate supporter are significantly connected with membership of certain sort of fan. On the other hand, marriage status, place of birth, working status, age, as well as educational level have not shown a significant connection.
