The study examines the effect of Ottoman expansion upon the southern Transylvanian city of Braşov (Kronstadt), as evident in the documents issued at that time. The time frame chosen begins with the first organised Ottoman invasion of Transylvania in 1438 and the Battle of Breadfield in 1479. These examined aspects include the psychological factor of the threat posed by the Ottomans, the system of information, politics and related obligations, the relations to Moldavia and Wallachia, the effects upon trade, the city’s fortifications, the production and supply of weapons, the city’s own scout network, ecclesiastic aspects as well as tangible evidence in the documents of the lives of individuals.

The result of this research is a representation of the pervasive influence that this dangerous situation had upon the political, military, economic and social components of the lives of the individuals who made up the population of the city. The very presence of the fortifications altered the city’s outward appearance.
