"Remembering? Forgetting is more pleasant!" Memory as a Central Topic in Franz Blei's Autobiography

The autobiography of Franz Blei Erzählung eines Lebens (Story of a Life), published in 1930, is remarkable for many reasons. Especially striking is the intensive discussion of the relationship between reality and fiction. Blei permanently raises the question how reality refers to memory, which makes the text also quite interesting within the contemporary discussion in theory of memory. On the one hand Franz Blei anticipates some of the concepts of Maurice Halbwachs, Pierre Nora or Jan Assmann, on the other hand he takes up some which he had already dealt with in former works. Blei’s autobiography could in this respect be interpreted in the context of reflexive modernity and refers to the ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche and of the Empiriocriticism.
